Flourish Through Failure
Perhaps the most famous quote about entrepreneurship is found in a Fortune article dated September 25th, 2014 titled, “Why Startups Fail According to Their Founders”.
You probably can’t finish the five syllables of en-tre-pre-neur-ship before someone vomits this quote out at you.
“Nine out of 10 startups fail…”
Truth be told, we like that article. We even like that statistic.
But here’s one thing that crosses our minds every time we read it: There simply aren’t enough failures.
In 2012, the Small Business Administration found that 16 percent of people in the United States own their own business. Or, as we like to say, are entrepreneurs.
With a population of approximately 323 million people, 16 percent of whom own businesses at a 90 percent failure rate, that means that we only have 4,651,200 failures.
If that looks like a big number, try comparing 323 to 4.65. Quite the difference.
The failure rate of startups didn’t sneak up on us as we started our own business. We were very aware of the challenges we were facing as we started this venture.
So why would anyone start something if the failure rate is 90 percent? That’s a tough sell, right?
We can’t speak for everyone else, but our team at Range has understood one very important thing since we all started this journey together.
We are convinced that on the other side of fear and failure is flourishing.
No, that doesn’t mean that Range will be a success. Apparently, our odds of succeeding aren’t all that good anyway.
But we know that personal growth, learning, challenges, successes and, yes, even failures await us.
Our fear was not of failure. Our fear was that we would miss the opportunity to flourish.
So what do you have to lose? Maybe it’s time for you to take that risk you have always dreamed of. Whether it’s starting your own business, going back to school, or even focusing on another area of self improvement, the time is now.
Don't let fear have a stronghold in your life. Don't balk when you see statistics that say you can't do it.
We are all in this together. It's time to take the leap.
